Walking and Biking After Dark: Visibility Tips for Naples

Earlier sunsets can make people walking, running and biking harder for drivers to see. Using bicycle lights, wearing reflective materials and choosing a well-lit route can help residents and visitors remain more visible while enjoying Naples’ cooler fall evenings.

Naples Pathways Coalition encourages everyone sharing the road to prepare for changing light conditions and give their full attention to the people around them.

Why Earlier Sunsets Require Extra Attention

When daylight hours become shorter, many ordinary activities begin or end after sunset. Children may be returning from after-school activities, adults may be exercising after work and families may be taking an evening walk after dinner.

Drivers who are accustomed to completing these trips during daylight may not immediately adjust to the darker conditions.

People outside of vehicles have little physical protection in a crash. Visibility equipment can help, but drivers must also slow down, eliminate distractions and actively look for people walking and biking.

How Walkers and Runners Can Improve Visibility

Dark clothing can make a person difficult to distinguish from the surrounding environment. Anyone walking or running in low-light conditions should choose clothing and equipment that help drivers notice them sooner.

Consider using:

  • Reflective vests or outer layers
  • Reflective arm and ankle bands
  • Bright or fluorescent clothing
  • A flashlight, headlamp or wearable light
  • Light-colored shoes or socks
  • Reflective accessories on bags or strollers

Reflective materials are especially useful when placed on moving parts of the body, such as the arms, ankles or feet. The movement can help attract a driver’s attention.

Do not assume that a driver has seen you, even when you are wearing reflective clothing. Remain alert at intersections, driveways and parking lot entrances.

Make Pets Visible During Evening Walks

A dog may be even more difficult for a driver to see, particularly if the animal has dark fur or is walking close to the roadway.

A reflective or illuminated leash, collar or harness can make a pet more noticeable. Walkers should also keep pets close and under control when approaching streets, driveways and other pathway users.

Florida Bicycle Lighting Requirements

Florida law requires bicycles used between sunset and sunrise to have specific lighting equipment.

A bicycle must be equipped with:

  • A white front lamp
  • A red rear lamp
  • A red rear reflector

The lights and reflector must meet the visibility distances established in Florida law.

Before an evening bicycle ride, confirm that both lights are charged, securely attached and unobstructed. Reflectors on the bicycle, helmet, clothing or gear can provide additional visibility.

Bicycle lights can also help during overcast weather, rain or other conditions that make riders more difficult to see.

Should Bicycle Lights Flash at Night?

Light modes should help others identify a rider without creating confusion or excessive glare. A steady front beam can help illuminate the path ahead, while rear lights may offer steady and flashing settings.

Florida’s bicycle statute establishes required colors and visibility distances but does not appear to specify whether the lights must use steady or flashing modes.

Riders should follow the light manufacturer’s instructions, avoid aiming a powerful headlight into another person’s eyes and use a setting appropriate for the conditions.

Choose a Safer Route Before Leaving

Visibility equipment is important, but route selection also matters.

When possible, look for:

  • Continuous sidewalks
  • Separated multiuse pathways
  • Clearly marked crossings
  • Lower vehicle speeds
  • Appropriate lighting
  • Fewer driveway and parking lot crossings
  • Clear sightlines at intersections

Before exploring walking trails in Naples or biking trails in Naples after dark, confirm that the location is open and that nighttime use is permitted. Parks, preserves and Collier County trails may close at sunset or have limited operating hours.

Tips for Drivers During Darker Evenings

Drivers have an important responsibility to watch for vulnerable road users.

During evening travel:

  • Slow down and remain alert
  • Put phones and other distractions away
  • Look for people before turning
  • Check sidewalks before crossing a driveway
  • Scan both sides of an intersection
  • Allow extra space when passing a cyclist
  • Use additional caution near schools, parks and neighborhoods
  • Check for approaching cyclists before opening a parked vehicle’s door

A person walking or biking may be visible one moment and difficult to see the next because of shadows, glare, landscaping or parked vehicles.

Drivers should never rely solely on reflective clothing or bicycle lights. They must actively look for people outside of vehicles.

A Visibility Checklist for Evening Activities

Before leaving for an evening walk, run or bicycle ride, ask:

For Walkers and Runners

  • Am I wearing something bright or reflective?
  • Do I have a flashlight, headlamp or wearable light?
  • Is my pet, stroller or bag visible?
  • Does someone know my route?
  • Is the route open and appropriate after dark?

For Bicyclists

  • Is my white front light working?
  • Are my red rear light and reflector visible?
  • Are all lights securely attached and charged?
  • Does my bicycle have additional reflectors?
  • Am I wearing a properly fitted helmet?
  • Have I chosen a route appropriate for my ability?
  • Can I see and be seen without creating glare for others?

A brief check can help prevent equipment problems once the activity is underway.

Join the 2026 Iron Joe Turkey Ride & Walk

The Iron Joe Turkey Ride & Walk is a longstanding Naples Pathways Coalition tradition that brings cyclists, walkers, families and supporters together for an active community event.

The 22nd Annual Iron Joe Turkey Ride & Walk is scheduled for Sunday, November 22, 2026, at Eagle Lakes Park.

Current event information lists:

  • 62-mile bicycle ride
  • 40-mile bicycle ride
  • 20-mile bicycle ride
  • 10-mile bicycle ride
  • 5-mile bicycle ride
  • 2.5-mile walk

Because the date, routes and event experience can change, participants should consult the current NPC event page for registration, start times, pricing and participation requirements.

Proceeds support Naples Pathways Coalition’s work to improve safety for people who walk, bike and run. This includes advocacy for the developing Paradise Coast Trail and efforts to reduce distracted driving through Hands-Free Florida.

Supporting Safer, More Connected Pathways

Visibility equipment can help people reduce risk today, but lasting transportation safety also requires thoughtful infrastructure.

Naples Pathways Coalition advocates for connected pathways in Southwest Florida, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and more places where people can walk, run and bike away from vehicle traffic.

The Paradise Coast Trail is an important part of that broader vision. The first seven-mile section is open, while most of the planned 100-plus-mile network remains in planning, design or future development.

As additional sections are completed, the trail is intended to create more opportunities for recreation, fitness and local connections throughout Collier County.
